Understanding and Identifying Patients with

Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Disorders

Having a baby is supposed to be one of the most joyful times in a woman’s life – right?  For 9 months, she awaits her child’s arrival with excitement and anticipation.  What she may be less prepared for are the vast emotional, physical, and relationship changes that accompany childbirth.  While having a baby is a joyous event, it is also a time of tremendous challenge and change. Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Disorders generally occur without warning and can happen to anyone – they do not discriminate.

This course is designed to offer information and knowledge on the spectrum of Postpartum Depression and Anxiety Disorders.  Participants will acquire skills related to symptom detection, screening tools, as well as explore how and when to implement appropriate patient referrals to mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

Identify at least 3 myths of motherhood that can trigger a postpartum reaction.

Differentiate among the spectrum of Postpartum Depression and Mood Disorders.

Identify and classify the risk factors that can cause a Postpartum Mood and/or Anxiety Disorder.

Administer the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.

Conduct appropriate patient referrals to mental health professionals.
